Koller confirms Dortmund interest

Sunday 13th May 2001

Anderlecht striker Jan Koller has warned Fulham that his future may lie in Germany after it emerged that Borussia Dortmund were lining up a Bundesliga record £8.75 million bid for him. "Dortmund are still in the race," the Czech Republic international insisted.

Representatives of the Belgian club met with Fulham, who have just won promotion to the Premiership, and they are believed to have made a bid of £8 million - but Anderlecht officials admitted last week that they were expecting a bid from Dortmund.

A move to the Westfalenstadion would give Koller the opportunity to link up with his compatriot Tomas Rosicky, who has been a huge hit since joining the club from Sparta Prague for a record £8.3 million.

Another draw for the German club is that they will be playing Champions' League football next season after guaranteeing a top-three place with a 4-1 demolition of Unterhaching on Saturday.

The ambitious side has made no secret of its desire to bring in extra firepower, with their current crop of strikers all suffering from various problems.

Heiko Herrlich has won his fight against a brain tumour, but his playing future is in doubt after six months on the sidelines, former Germany international Fredi Bobic has lost his touch in front of goal, and former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba has fallen out with coach Matthias Sammer.

"I don't understand all the fuss here at Dortmund," Dortmund director of sport Michael Zorc said last week before he promised new signings. "Everybody can be assured that we'll do our homework."

Dortmund have also been linked with Werder Bremen's highly-rated Peru international Claudio Pizarro and Banik Ostrava youngster Milan Baros.
