Koller not to WK Pity or not? The czech Republic was eliminated by belgium for a ticket to the world championship soccer next year in Korea and Japan. I saw both matches and in the end we can conclude that Belgium is not the most talented or best team but it justed performed better in the 2 matches. Belgium won 1-0 and 0-1. Koller didn't participate because of his red card some matches ago. So it is a pity we won't see the czech republic and Jan Koller but on the other hand........I am from Belgium so it can't be that bad can it? :) Here is a report of the match: 14 November 2001 (Teamtalk) -- Pavel Nedved and Milan Baros were both sent off as the Czech Republic crashed out of their World Cup play-off, losing 1-0 at home to Belgium. The Czech Republic, who were desperate to use home advantage to turn around their 1-0 deficit from the first leg, began the match attacking furiously. The Czech's had three chances in the opening 20 minutes, but Karel Poborsky and Vratislav Lokvenc were unable to finish off good moves. But as the first half progressed, the home team were unable to keep up the blistering pace, and gradually conceded more possession to the Belgians, although Pavel Srnicek was rarely threatened in the Czech goal. In the second half, the visitors began to make more of their chances, and Gert Verheyen was thwarted by Srnicek after he had beaten three defenders. An increasingly desperate Czech Republic began to play long balls with little success, although they were denied a penalty when Glen De Boeck appeared to handle inside the box. And when the referee did eventually award a spot-kick, it was to the dismay of the home supporters, as the foul on Verheyen presented Wilmots with the chance to seal the win, which he did without hesitation. In a tumultuous ending, both Nedved and Baros were sent off. Source: Internetsoccer |
